ROHS AND EN 71
In order to protect both the consumer and the trade The Laboratory at The Birmingham Assay Office specialises in tests which ensure that jewellery and watch products comply with EU regulations. Alongside general safety legislation there are two pieces of European Legislation which restrict the level of potentially harmful elements and are particularly relevant to the jewellery and watch industry.

THE RESTRICTION OF HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCES DIRECTIVE 2002/95/EC (RoHS) becomes applicable after an electronic item has been disposed of. The aim of the directive is to reduce health and environmental risks after the article has been discarded, when potentially toxic elements can leach back into the earth and cause long term damage and pollution and in turn risk to human health. This has implications for the Watch industry.

BS EN 71 - SAFETY OF TOYS
The British Standard EN 71 comprises 11 sections which regulate the Safety of Toys. In the absence of other legislation specific to certain products such as jewellery, this standard is also applied by other sectors to ensure that products comply with the General Product Safety regulations.
